One or both jaws may grow too much or too little. Orthognathic (jaw straightening) surgery is performed in conjunction with orthodontics so that both the teeth and jaws will be properly positioned for an ideal occlusion (bite) and the best facial appearance. While the surgery itself will require between 2 to 5 hours, the orthodontic treatment may extend over one to two years.

As part of the initial evaluation, facial measurements, photographs, x-rays and dental impressions (models of the teeth) will be taken. The combination of orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery will move your teeth and jaws into an improved position that is more balanced, functional and healthy. Not only should you be able to bite, breathe and speak better, but your facial appearance will be enhanced in the process.
